AGC mulls reinstating murder charge against senior cop over teen’s death

The Attorney-General’s Chambers is considering reinstating the murder charge against a senior police officer over the death of a 17-year-old student in Ipoh, Perak in 2023.
Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said the AGC will file an appeal against the jail sentence of seven years and six months imposed on Nazri Abdul Razak, 47, on a reduced charge, Bernama reported.
Nazri was initially charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or 30 to 40 years in prison and 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
On Wednesday, the High Court in Ipoh reduced the charge to culpable homicide not amounting to murder after finding that the prosecution had established a prima facie case for the lesser offence.
Nazri pleaded guilty to the amended charge and was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison, with the term to commence from the date of his arrest Dec 15, 2023.
Nazri, who was with the Kedah police headquarters at the time, was accused of causing the death of Form 5 student Zaharif Affendi Zamrie on Dec 15, 2023.
The incident occurred near SMK Jati in Ipoh, between 11.45am and 12.32pm.
