Singapore out of FIFA ASEAN Cup after 6-0 thrashing by arch-rivals Malaysia
BANDUNG – The Lions’ inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign came to an end after a 6-0 drubbing by Causeway rivals Malaysia at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium on Oct 1.
A hat-trick from Brazil-born striker Bergson, coupled with goals from Stuart Wilkin, Paulo Josue and Syahir Bashah, resulted in the Lions’ heaviest defeat under coach Gavin Lee.
It is also Singapore’s worst defeat to Malaysia at senior level since losing by the same margin in 1978 and serves as a painful reality check just three months before the Asian Cup.
Malaysia are level on seven points with leaders Indonesia but have an inferior goal difference, and will likely meet Vietnam in the third-place play-off on Oct 5.
The hosts, who thrashed Bangladesh 9-2 in another match played simultaneously at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, topped the group and will likely meet Group B winners Thailand in the final on the same day.
Singapore are third in Group A with three points, while Bangladesh are last with no points.
