Ex-minister claims trial to misappropriating RM860mil of Tabung Haji funds
Former religious affairs minister Jamil Khir Baharom pleaded not guilty at the sessions court here today to three counts of misappropriating a total of over RM860.3 million in funds belonging to Tabung Haji (TH).
He is accused of misappropriating the sum and transferring it to Al-Rawda Real Estate Development And Projects Management Co Ltd between April 3, 2015 and Aug 17, 2017, at the office of the religious affairs minister in Putrajaya.
The charges were framed under Section 403 of the Penal Code, punishable by a fine and imprisonment of between six months and five years, upon conviction.
The first charge accuses Jamil of dishonestly causing TH to dispose of RM42,942,074, equivalent to 44.17 million Saudi riyal, to Al-Rawda on April 3, 2015.
The second charge accuses him of dishonestly causing the pilgrims’ fund to dispose of RM288,172,134.64, equivalent to over 250 million Saudi riyal, to Al-Rawda on Dec 14, 2016.
In the third charge, Jamil is said to have dishonestly caused TH to dispose of RM529,194,561.87, equivalent to over 471 million Saudi riyal, to Al-Rawda on Aug 17, 2017.
Judge Rosli Ahmad granted him bail of RM300,000 with one surety and ordered him to surrender his passport to the court pending disposal of the case.
The court set Nov 5 for case management.
Jamil was represented by lawyer Hisyam Teh Poh Teik while deputy public prosecutor Farah Ezlin Yusof Khan appeared for the prosecution.
