Indonesia prepares 1 million tons of SPHP rice to stabilize prices

Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - The government has prepared one million tons of rice through the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program to stabilize rice prices and ease the public’s burden amid potential food price increases toward the end of 2026.

“SPHP rice is a government measure to ensure a stable supply of rice at affordable prices. Through this program, people are expected to meet their food needs without being burdened by price increases, especially toward the end of the year,” Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan said here on Tuesday.

Hasan made the statement during the distribution of rice food aid for the October-December 2026 allocation in Koto Tangah Sub-district, Padang, on November 3. He said SPHP rice is sold at Rp12,500 per kilogram, below the market price of around Rp15,000 per kilogram.

“The government provides a subsidy of Rp2,500 per kilogram so that people can buy SPHP rice at Rp12,500. The price difference is borne by the government, not a loss for the state logistics agency Bulog,” he said.

Hasan said the SPHP rice program was designed to anticipate food price volatility following a decline in rice production due to the dry season.

He noted that even small increases in the prices of basic necessities could affect people’s purchasing power, particularly that of low-income households.

The government is therefore providing SPHP rice as an alternative that allows people to obtain rice at more affordable prices.

He emphasized that SPHP rice is available for purchase by the general public, unlike free food aid, which is reserved for beneficiary families in the poorest 40 percent of households, classified as deciles 1 to 4.

In addition to SPHP rice, the government has prepared other food commodity interventions to control prices toward the end of the year. These include the release of 150,000 tons of corn at Rp5,500 per kilogram for micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) broiler and layer chicken farmers.

Hasan added that the government had also prepared 380,000 tons of rice stored for more than a year for food-processing industries, including producers of cake flour and vermicelli, at Rp11,000 per kilogram. He said the measures were expected to ensure the availability of raw materials while preventing price increases for food products at the consumer level.
