KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — Chery Auto Malaysia has moved to head off online speculation after images of a damaged Chery Tiggo Cross with a detached wheel and its axle spread on social media.

The incident happened when the Chery car collided with a Perodua Myvi on the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) yesterday.

“We wish to clarify that the damage to the front bumper and detachment of the wheel were a result of the accident and not due to a failure of the vehicle’s component parts,” Chery said in a statement.

It said its team had already contacted the customer involved and was providing the necessary assistance.

The company urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, warning that it could cause unnecessary concern among road users and contribute to misinformation.

It added that the safety and well-being of its customers remained its utmost priority, and directed those with enquiries to the Chery Careline at 03-9388 0888.

Pictures of the scene on social media showed both vehicles damaged in the right lane of the highway.

Chery’s statement did not detail how the crash happened or whether investigations by the authorities had been completed.

The incident comes about a month after the Road Transport Department temporarily suspended the vehicle type approval certificate for the Chery Omoda 5 following a separate incident in Johor Bahru.

In that case last month, the rear axle assembly of an Omoda 5 was reported to have come loose, prompting the department to launch a technical investigation and an audit of the production process, assembly and component suppliers.

Chery later announced a recall campaign for certain Omoda 5 variants, offering free inspection and replacement of the related parts.
