Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai cruise through Asian Games 2026 opener as more Malaysian shuttlers advance

NAGOYA, Sept 25 — Malaysian mixed doubles veterans Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie began their Asian Games individual campaign in commanding fashion, beating Taiwan’s Yang Po Hsuan-Hu Ling Fang 21-14, 21-11 in just 28 minutes.

Free Malaysia Today reported that the world No 10 husband-and-wife pair will next face India’s Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto.

The Games have previously proved difficult territory for Soon Huat-Shevon, who were eliminated in the second round at both Jakarta-Palembang 2018 and Hangzhou 2022 and are still chasing their first Asian Games medal.

Men’s singles shuttler Justin Hoh also advanced after receiving a walkover from Thailand’s Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul.

Meanwhile, new mixed doubles combination Chen Tang Jie-Cheng Su Yin dispatched Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Jumar-Urmi Akter 21-14, 21-9 to set up a second-round meeting with South Korea’s world No 25 Kim Jae Hyeon-Jang Ha Jeong.

Tang Jie-Su Yin had played just one competitive tournament together before the Asian Games, making their debut at the China Masters earlier this month where they lost in the opening round to China’s world No 6 Guo Xin Wa-Chen Fang Hui.
