Police probe death of Delta deputy director

The Delta State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Adeda, with one person arrested in connection with the incident.

The investigation followed a complaint alleging that Adeda was beaten during an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said three aides to the commissioner were named in the complaint as allegedly involved in the incident.

He identified them as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh, adding that Adoh had been arrested while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other two.

Edafe said the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Erale, had directed the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.

He said investigators would examine available evidence, including video recordings, eyewitness accounts and medical records, to establish what transpired.

According to the police spokesman, the actions of all persons connected with the incident would also be examined before determining whether anyone was culpable.

Earle assured the deceased’s family that the command would conduct the investigation professionally and without interference.

He said anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of the person’s status or position.

The police commissioner appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid reaching conclusions before the completion of the investigation.

He also commiserated with Adeda’s family over his death.
