Prabowo summons ministers, BNN to bolster anti-drug campaign

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto summoned several officials, including Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto and Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Suyudi Ario Seto, to discuss strategies for eradicating drug abuse.

Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace Complex here on Tuesday, Brian said the discussions would focus on utilizing university research to support anti-narcotics measures.

“The agenda is focused on eradicating drug problems. I was also asked to bring along one researcher and several lecturers from the University of Indonesia (UI) who specialize in narcotics, addiction, and related fields,” Brian said.

He explained that academic research would be closely aligned with the operational needs of the BNN and the Ministry of Health, particularly in the areas of therapeutic interventions and rehabilitation.

“It encompasses everything related to narcotics - whether it is detection technology, rehabilitation methods, or perhaps the utilization of confiscated substances,” Brian said, adding that the research also covers the chemical composition of narcotics and their effects on the human body.

Brian emphasized that research findings from universities are intended to be utilized by other institutions according to their specific needs in addressing drug-related issues.

The meeting also included National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Chief Arif Satria, Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, and Deputy Health Minister Dante Saksono Harbuwono.

Minister Supratman, who arrived at the palace complex at around 12:30 p.m. local time (GMT+7), confirmed that he would present a specific report to the President during the meeting. However, he declined to disclose details before the meeting.

“I will share it after reporting to the President,” Supratman said briefly.
