Top minister confirms October roll-out of mass bank account opening

South Lampung (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that the government will start rolling out the mass opening of bank accounts for every Indonesian above 17 years old from October 2026.
"From October 2026, every Indonesian above 17 years old will get a new bank account from BRI. Each account will receive Rp50 thousand," Hasan, referring to state-owned Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), stated here on Friday.
He said the new bank account will facilitate the distribution of the government's financial assistance, ensuring the aid is received directly by each recipient.
"All forms of assistance will be received from the bank account, scholarships, food assistance, cash assistance, family assistance, and all others," he added.
As the financial assistance will be transferred directly to each resident’s bank account, the top minister said other assistance will still be provided in the form of goods through government-operated village cooperatives.
"Goods assistance, including rice, corn, and farming equipment, will be distributed by the village cooperatives. We hope it will also start in October," he said.
Hasan expressed hope that through the bank account provided to every adult in Indonesia, the distribution of financial aid will be much easier and direct.
President Prabowo Subianto on Monday (Sept 7) instructed his cabinet to ensure that every Indonesian citizen has a bank account as part of efforts to boost financial inclusion and financial literacy.
As part of the initiative, the president instructed state-owned banks, particularly BRI and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI), to prepare bank accounts for the public.
On Wednesday (Sept 9), Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the government is preparing around Rp11 trillion (US$600 million) from the state budget for the planned mass bank account opening.
A joint survey by the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Statistics Indonesia (BPS) shows that Indonesia's financial inclusion rate has reached 93.62 percent, while financial literacy stands at 63.57 percent.
