Marvel reveals an unexpected redesign for an X-Men icon, whose new appearance is breathtaking precisely because of how impractical it seems. The X-Men's character roster has always been flexible and has embraced diverse figures with skills and backgrounds that expand the team’s scope beyond mutantkind alone. Most mutant teams are often open to welcoming allies whose powers or abilities come from sources different from the X-Gene. For example, Deadpool's healing factor was artificially engineered through experimentation inspired by Wolverine, Warlock is a techno-organic alien from the Technarchy, Fantomex was created through genetic engineering and advanced technology, and Longshot hails from the Mojoverse.

The X-Men’s most memorable bases and headquarters have become iconic settings in Marvel lore. Chief among them is the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning in Westchester, New York, which serves as both a school and sanctuary for young mutants while doubling as the team’s main headquarters. During darker times, the team has relocated to the underground base in the Australian Outback, and later, the island of Utopia off the coast of San Francisco has become a fortress-like home. Recently, the Uncanny X-Men have set up base in Louisiana, where their Haven House serves as a headquarters and sanctuary for Rogue and Monet's team.

One Marvel character brings both of these categories together as one of the X-Men's most trusted non-mutant ally and one of their most iconic headquarters, both at the same time.

Krakoa Is A Walking City On Earth-295

Earth-616's Remy Lebeau is trading places with his Earth-295 counterpart, the Gambit from the Age of Apocalypse timeline, in Gambit Gone. Before the Remys switch places, Gambit Gone #1 visits each of them in their respective home timelines. On Earth-295, Apocalypse has fallen, and "the X-Men gather atop the mutant island Krakoa, their walking base..." Instead of a floating island with a tree for a face, the Krakoa from the Age of Apocalypse timeline bears a striking resemblance to Man-Thing, and it possesses a more animalistic, four-legged body that allows it to walk while carrying a full city on its back, skyscrapers and everything.

The Age of Apocalypse timeline plays with even wilder concepts than Earth-616, and it has introduced bombastic designs like the now-iconic Age of Apocalypse Wolverine, the purple-skinned and green-clad Blink, and En Sabah Nur's larger-than-life body morphing. Earth-295's walking Krakoa fits this timeline perfectly even though the concept breaks the moment it's given some deeper thought. As well-designed as they might be, every step of the walking Krakoa should cause serious structural damage to its buildings, and any sudden movement could easily destroy the whole city and injure thousands of inhabitants.

Krakoa Might Be A Canon Event For The X-Men

All X-Men Across The Multiverse May Eventually Find Their Home In Krakoa

For decades, the tragedy of mutantkind has been the futile struggle to integrate into a human world that actively hates and fears them. Krakoa represents the inevitable paradigm shift where their leaders finally realize that survival requires independence instead of assimilation. Earth-295's introduction of the walking Krakoa suggests most versions of the X-Men eventually decide to lock themselves away on Krakoa, establishing a mutant-only society that seeks complete detachment from humankind. In Gambit Gone, Magneto is the leader figure for mutants, Rogue is his romantic partner, and Charles Xavier continues to be dead, which in turn suggests the Krakoan Resurrection protocols don't exist yet.

The true significance of Krakoa as a recurring event wouldn't depend on whether the experiment ultimately succeeds or leads to an even bigger threat of extinction. Even when targeted by the techno-fascist forces of Orchis, torn apart by internal politics, or entirely lost to a devastating Fall of X, Krakoa becomes a symbol of a unified mutant culture and a milestone for their survival. With Earth-295's walking city of Krakoa already established, this concept could be reinforced by other famous timelines, including the debut of the live-action Krakoa in the MCU's upcoming X-Men reboot.
