As Netflix's Wednesday approaches its third season, it's difficult to shake the feeling that this will be a significant turning point for the series. The teen-horror show is by far the most distinctive in the Addams Family franchise, as it primarily focuses on Wednesday Addams, presenting her as a sort of macabre Sherlock Holmes. The concept was obviously pure gold, since Wednesday remains one of Netflix's top series of all time, and with only two seasons down, this show should have a long future ahead of it. However, season 3 is starting to feel like an ending.
There has currently been no official indication that Wednesday season 3 will wrap up the show. Hype around this series is still high, and Netflix can almost certainly count on another long stint in the top 10. However, the story's details subtly suggest that things are about to change. First and foremost, Wednesday season 2 ended with Wednesday and Uncle Fester leaving Nevermore to find Enid, who is stuck in her wolf form. Then, star Jenna Ortega has teased that Wednesday season 3 will follow her character into her final year at Nevermore Academy.
Because Wednesday is a teen series structured around the magical high school, the titular character's graduation and emergence into adult life feels like a natural stopping point. It's a bit difficult, in fact, to imagine Wednesday carrying on in any organic way, at least as the same series. A massive shift away from teenagerdom would be a shift in genre, suggesting that, rather than more Wednesday, the Addams Family franchise is preparing to head in a different direction.
This doesn't necessarily mean that Ortega's Wednesday Addams is headed off screens for good. As big as Wednesday is, we can certainly expect more sequels and spinoffs featuring the character, though perhaps focusing more on other members of the Addams family. If Wednesday season 3 really is the end of this era, then we can expect it to also set the stage for its successor. With Wednesday and Fester on their big road trip, the door for a global Addams experience is thrown wide open.
Wednesday Hints That The Addams Family Is Going Global
It was unclear at the end of Wednesday season 2 precisely where Wednesday and Uncle Fester's search for Enid would take them. Now, sneak peeks at season 3 provide a bit of an answer. One image shows Wednesday on her uncle's motorcycle and with the iconic Eiffel Tower in the background. Somehow or another, the pair has ended up in Paris.
It's odd that Enid could make it abroad as a werewolf, so it could be that this little trip is a sort of detour—possibly a first big step out into the wider world for Wednesday Addams as she approaches adulthood. It would make sense that, after years of Addamses set in their mansion and a spinoff placing Wednesday in a magical academy, the next big step of the Addams Family would be to let these kooky characters free on an unsuspecting planet.
Uncle Fester has seen a lot of the world, so a new spinoff could easily follow him through adventures. Wednesday season 3's buddy road trip approach would be the perfect way to introduce the general idea. What's more, previous episodes of Wednesday teased a family history the Addams Family never fully explored, such as the reveal that Wednesday's paternal grandmother had earned her fortune by traveling the world with Xavier's godmother, swindling the rich and powerful.
Suffice it to say, there's a broader story here. Staying at Nevermore doesn't seem possible, and heading back into the Addams Family mansion would feel like a step backward from such a unique spinoff series. The only alternative is to follow through on Wednesday's big debut to the international plane. The big question now is whether the world is truly ready for the Addamses.
