Police today confirmed that the shooting at Jalan Gertak Merah near the Johor Zoo here yesterday involved an officer who fired at a car being driven in a dangerous manner by a man with a criminal record.

Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said the 28-year-old suspect, who was driving a Honda City with a 29-year-old female companion, was chased by police for 1km before the shooting occurred. Various types of drugs were also found.

Police fired two shots after the car rammed into several civilian vehicles, one of which hit the male suspect in the head.

“The suspects (the man and his companion) were still inside the car when the two shots were fired and did not act aggressively,” he told a press conference at the Johor contingent police headquarters here.

Rahaman said further checks of the suspects’ car found seven plastic packets containing 373.80g of ecstasy powder and 17 vape cartridges containing 6.8ml of ketamine liquid.

He said the male suspect has a criminal record of 16 offences, including drug-related crimes, robbery, rape and theft, and is wanted in connection with a drug offence in Seri Alam.

The female suspect also has a criminal record of one drug-related offence. Both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine.

Rahaman said the male suspect, who was injured in the shooting, is in stable condition and receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.

Police will apply for a remand order for the female suspect today. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, and Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
