Jennie to Headline Soundtrack for Netflix’s Upcoming Animated Film ‘Steps’

Jennie is set to headline the soundtrack for Netflix’s upcoming animated film Steps with a new song.

Netflix announced the soundtrack, which is entirely written and produced by prolific songwriter Justin Tranter, for the animated comedy adventure Thursday. Global pop star and Blackpink member Jennie will lead the soundtrack with a new track “Someone to Hold.” There will be four original songs on the album, with additional vocals from Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried, Rose Gray and Emei and a score by Kris Bowers.

“I am so excited to join the Steps family and it was really fun making my first song for an animated film,” Jennie said in a statement. “I love how much heart and personality the characters have, and I’m so happy I got to be a little part of their world. I hope you enjoy ‘Steps’ and ‘Someone to Hold’ as much as I do and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it.”

Tranter describes Jennie’s track as “pure danceable joy” inspired by vintage dance pop, while Emei’s track “The Understudy” was described as “an underdog anthem.” Gray’s track, “Meet Me on the Dance Floor,” is an electro dance pop villain song. Seyfried’s track “Smile and a Song” is more of an “old school musical theater banger,” according to the songwriter.

Adds Tranter, “The story in Steps lends itself beautifully to a variety of voices and sonics, and the main throughline in the soundtrack is dance music.”

The announcement comes alongside the trailer for the film, released Thursday morning. A preview of “Someone to Hold” is included in trailer.

Centering around Cinderella’s stepsisters, the logline for Steps reads, “Think you know Cinderella’s ‘evil’ stepsisters? Think again. Tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith (Ali Wong) steals the Fairy Godmother (Bette Midler)’s magic wand and hijacks the Royal Ball with her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu), breaking the Cinderella story as we know it and dooming the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of Priscilla (Nikki Glaser), a villainous schemer who swoops in and snatches the throne. Now, Lilith must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to fight biker trolls, outrun evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods on an epic quest to save the kingdom, but most importantly, their relationship.”

Steps and its companion soundtrack are set to be released on Nov. 20.
