King's former horse wins Australia's prestigious Melbourne Cup

Translate

Australian jockey Ethan Brown has ridden Point Of Law, a horse previously owned by King Charles, to victory in this year's Melbourne Cup, the country's most prestigious race.

Point of Law, which was bought from the King earlier this year for an undisclosed sum, was considered an early favourite.

Brown pushed Point Of Law from the middle of the pack to take the lead with just a few hundred metres to go.

The Melbourne Cup has run in Australia since 1861, often referred to as the "race that stops a nation". With a prize of A$10.2m ($7.04m; £5.3m), it is the country's third richest race.

"Don't wake me up," said Brown, in the post-race interview.

"Just stay cool, stay patient," Brown said, recalling his thoughts as he pushed Point Of Law to overtake Royal Supremacy from a dozen lengths behind on the home stretch.
