Fiat Multiplay concept is a six-seat family car that can morph into a pick-up truck

Fiat is tuning flexibility into the future of motoring with its new Multuplay concept model that can go from people carrier to workhorse in a matter of moments.

The 4.45m-long concept can switch from a six-seat family car with space for a pet to a four-seat pick-up with an open bed.

Italy's car giant says that the Multiplay combines the space efficiency of an MPV, the character of an SUV, and the versatility of a pick-up.

Fiat says it has been inspired by models from its lineage, including the 1956 Fiat 600 and the divisively-styled 1998 Multipla.

However, Fiat stresses that the Multiplay is 'conceived as a laboratory of solutions for tomorrow's mobility' and is not a preview of a specific production model.

Members of the public can see the Multiplay at the Paris Motor Show from October 12.

How the Multiplay transforms

The Multiplay can transform through its 'Metamorfosi' C-pillar.

This rear module slides longitudinally, transforming an enclosed family vehicle into a pick-up in just a few movements.

As such, the cabin can transform from a six-seater that comes with an additional 'Petsenger seat' to a pick-up with a four-seat configuration that has an open bed for bicycles, sports, and outdoor equipment.

The rear spoiler is also multifunctional and can rotate to become an integrated bike rack capable of carrying two bikes when in its pick-up configuration.

In this way, the Multiplay can activate its cargo capacity whenever needed.

How the Multipla spirit arrives in the Multiplay

The Multiplay brings together two legacy projects that redefined the relationship between exterior dimensions and interior space.

In 1956, the Fiat 600 Multipla could seat six people in around 3.5 metres, while the 1998 Multipla had six seats across two rows in a footprint under four metres long.

Using these as inspiration, the new concept continues the theme of passenger space, comfort, and cargo capacity.
