Arsenal Make 27-Year History During Leeds Comeback Win

Translate

Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Leeds was tinged with history as the Gunners got themselves back to winning ways.

Mikel Arteta’s men were given a fright at the Emirates against a dogged Leeds side who went ahead early in the second half through James Justin.

The Gunners were staring at back-to-back league defeats until Riccardo Calafiori stabbed home from close range to level the score.

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes finished off a brilliant team move in the 70th minute to provisionally draw Arsenal level with leaders Manchester City at the top of the table.

Ahead of the match, Arteta opted for a revised starting line-up consisting of a heavy English presence.

Arsenal boasted six English outfield players in a starting XI for a Premier League game for the first time since a match against Manchester United in February 1999, as reported by talkSPORT.

Ben White, Ezri Konsa, and Myles Lewis-Skelly lined-up from the start against a Leeds side unbeaten in the league prior to kickoff.

They were joined by Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke for the lunchtime clash.

Arsenal’s previous line-up consisting of six Englishmen included Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Steve Bould, Tony Adams, Ray Parlour and Stephen Hughes.

Saturday’s victory was the perfect response to the 3-0 defeat at Brighton prior to the international break.

The Gunners have had three weeks to stew over the thrashing at the Amex Stadium and it appeared as though Leeds were next in line to upset the reigning champions.

The defeat left Daniel Farke’s side still without a win over the north London side since 2003.
