Trade Ministry verifies 336 markets for 2027 revitalization program

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Trade Ministry has verified 336 of 450 traditional markets proposed for revitalization assistance in 2027 by 163 district and municipal governments across Indonesia.

After a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Thursday, Minister Budi Santoso stressed the need for selection, saying, “it is not plausible to accommodate all proposals” with the Rp1.2 trillion (US$67.6 million) budget planned for next year’s market development program.

The allocation represents a substantial share of the Rp1.86 trillion in additional funds requested by the ministry for its 2027 budget, which currently stands at Rp1.56 trillion.

Against that backdrop, Santoso urged regional governments to accompany revitalization proposals with studies outlining their potential impacts on local economies, including buyers and merchants, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises.

In addition to impact projections, the minister underscored the need to ensure proper management and continued improvements after revitalization.

“We will not approve poor proposals. In short, markets must be clean and well managed,” Santoso said, warning against neglected maintenance following revitalization.

In that regard, he suggested continued oversight of revitalized markets involving the government and DPR Commission VI to ensure optimal outcomes from the initiative.

During the meeting, Commission VI urged the Trade Ministry to consider several indicators when selecting proposals, including regional needs, merchant and buyer activity patterns, and the reliability of market management.

In September last year, the Trade Ministry had also received proposals to revitalize 404 markets from 194 district and municipal governments, requiring a budget of Rp2.42 trillion (over US$136 million).

In April 2026, the ministry inaugurated the Sidayu Industrial Thematic Market in Gresik, East Java, which can accommodate 538 merchants. The market is equipped with various supporting facilities for trade and public services.

Later, in June, the ministry said that upgrading traditional markets serves as part of efforts to provide residents with safer, cleaner, more comfortable, and more competitive shopping sites.
