Documents and electronic devices that are believed to be relevant to the investigation of the murder of Lieutenant-General Sindile Mfazi were seized during a search-and-seizure operation in July at the home of a 57-year-old former police general.
In addition, national Cold Case Unit officers found more than 100 rounds of police-issued ammunition, including R5 and 9mm ammunition, at the Centurion property.
The former general was arrested and faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition in contravention of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
She said the former general left the police service in 2009, and added that there were “no valid reasons for his possession of the SAPS-issued ammunition”.

He is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
It is unclear whether he is being investigated in connection with allegations related to Mfazi’s murder.
Mfazi died in 2021.
His death was initially attributed to complications of Covid-19. However, subsequent information suggested he may have been poisoned, prompting authorities to exhume his body for toxicology testing at the request of the family.
He served as deputy national police commissioner for crime detection and was reportedly involved in several high-profile investigations, including the Phala Phala saga and allegations of fraud in the procurement of personal protective equipment within the police.
