Police seize 7.2 kg of methamphetamine, arrest suspect in Jakarta

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Central Jakarta police have seized 7,218.1 grams, or about 7.2 kg, of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp10 billion (about U$567,000) and arrested a suspect in West Jakarta, police said.

“The case began with public information about suspicious activity on Jelambar Baru Raya Street in West Jakarta,” Central Jakarta Police Chief Reynold E.P. Hutagalung said in a statement on Monday.

After receiving the report, the police narcotics unit investigated and monitored the area before arresting the suspect, identified as SH, 35, in Grogol Petamburan, police said.

During a search, officers found narcotics packages inside a paper bag. They then searched SH's rented room and found a gray suitcase containing seven large packages of methamphetamine.

Police are continuing to investigate the case and search for a suspected drug dealer identified as B, who is on the wanted list, they said.

SH faces charges under Article 114(2), or alternatively Article 112(2), of Indonesia's 2009 Narcotics Law, carrying the death penalty, life imprisonment or six to 20 years in prison.

“This case shows we will not give drug dealers room to operate. We will continue working to keep Central Jakarta free from narcotics trafficking,” Reynold said.

Central Jakarta police narcotics chief Wisnu S. Kuncoro said SH was suspected of acting as an intermediary in the drug transaction.

“The suspect's modus operandi was to act as an intermediary in narcotics sales. He said he worked on orders from a dealer identified as B, who is now wanted,” Wisnu said.

Wisnu said SH was promised Rp5 million (US$284) for every kilogram of methamphetamine distributed. He had received Rp6 million, with the remainder promised after all the drugs were sold.

Police seized 7,218.1 grams of methamphetamine as evidence. Investigators also conducted a urine test, questioned witnesses and tested the drugs at the National Police Forensic Laboratory.

Wisnu said the seizure of 7.2 kg of methamphetamine was estimated to have prevented the drugs from being distributed and consumed by the public.

“By seizing 7.2 kg of methamphetamine, we estimate that we have protected about 72,200 young people from drug addiction,” he said.
