DC Explains Full Backstory Of Justice League's Best New Hero

Adam has been writing in the entertainment news space for over a decade. Beginning his career of covering film and TV at CinemaBlend, he has also appeared on The Flash Podcast and done several radio spots.
While many superheroes have joined the Justice League over the decades, it’s rare that the team’s roster has been as large as it currently is in Justice League Unlimited. Following the events of Absolute Power, core members like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman opened up the Justice League’s ranks to include most of the world’s superheroes. That lineup has grown even larger post-DC K.O. with the implementation of an amnesty program for a handful of former supervillains.
Most of the heroes who make up the expanded the Justice League these days are familiar faces, but a few new players have also been thrown into the mix since the title launched in late 2024. Two years later, DC has delivered the full backstory for the best character from this group of new DC heroes, and it’s a heartbreaking tale.
Cadejos’ Origin Story Has Been Revealed
Justice League: The Dark Realm Special #1, Written And Illustrated By Dan Mora
Introduced in Absolute Power #3, Cadejos is arguably the most imposing new addition who’s been featured in the stacked Justice League Unlimited. The man known as Andrés Aguilar can turn into a fiery, towering werewolf-like figure who’s armed with magical chains, and he’s been seen fighting the forces of evil alongside fellow Costa Rican heroes Boruka and Rana Dorada. Justice League: The Dark Realm Special #1 informs readers that Andrés obtained his Cadejos form thanks to the tragic kidnapping of Victoria, his young daughter.
This issue opens with Andrés dreaming about when Victoria was taken by a demonic, beetle-like monster, only to be awoken by the Cadejos entity with whom he’s bonded. Andrés agreed to let this spirit wolf so he’d have the power to rescue Victoria. It’s also revealed that Cadejos once worked with his brothers to keep our reality and the Dark Realm apart. However, he broke the laws imposed by their creator, resulting in Cadejos being stripped of his power, bound in chains, and walking the world as a “witness” until meeting Andrés.
Justice League: The Dark Realm Special #1 sees Cadejos teaming up with Boruka, Rana Dorada, The Captain, Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), and Zatanna to close a portal to the Dark Realm. Up until this point, Andrés had been in the driver’s seat, i.e. been in control of his own body when wielding the Cadejos power. In order to pull off the Justice League’s latest objective, Andrés agrees to temporarily relinquish control to Cadejos, unleashing an even more monstrous Cadejos form.
The good news is that Cadejos successfully closes the portal by rescuing the little girl who was required to keep it open after two others were sacrificed to open it. The bad news is that this breach into the Dark Realm, which contains the manifestations of the negative energy produced by humans, was open too long. This issue’s starring Justice League heroes had enough trouble dealing with the manifestation born from the “fear, pain, and suffering left” by cancer that bonded with a human. It’s possible other manifestations crossed over as well.
Even worse, the cancer manifestation claimed that Darkseid showed it the path from the Dark Realm to Earth. This plants even more narrative seeds for the inevitable return of the lord of Apokolips, who’s been busy conquering other universes after DC K.O. While that all-too familiar threat and potentially more Dark Realm manifestations loom on the horizon, Andrés and Cadejos are still determined to find Victoria someday.
Justice League: The Dark Realm Special #1 is now available from DC Comics.
