HBO's Neo-Noir Masterpiece Officially Returns In 2027

Shows like The Sopranos turned HBO into a ratings juggernaut and the home of prestige drama, but while the best TV shows on HBO have, at times, been gritty and violent, like its Western saga, Deadwood, they are rarely truly disturbing. Series that break this mold to provide both nightmare fuel and mystery for viewers still stand out today, and after a three-year hiatus, one of these is returning to the platform in 2027 with an actor who is arguably its best casting decision yet.

The first season of True Detective was the perfect neo-noir TV show and a crime series unlike any other, with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, flawed but iconic characters who have come to define the series. Rust Cohle's nihilism and philosophical commentary have made him immensely quotable, with a place among the greatest TV detectives of all time, and while each season of True Detective works as a standalone story, the show has spent its subsequent seasons trying to live up to its groundbreaking first.

True Detective Is A Genre-Blending Neo-Noir Masterpiece

Two characters from True Detective season 4 looking at the notes

True Detective's first season introduced it as a hard-boiled detective show, with Cohle and Hart resembling classic 1930s private eyes straight out of a film noir. As the supernatural and Lovecraftian elements began to enter the story, True Detective became something else entirely, blending film noir with H. P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, which heavily features themes of madness, and exploring the possibility that the narrator is somewhat unreliable. TV shows like Twin Peaks have combined genres before, but True Detective is more grounded, with a Southern Gothic tone that impressed both critics and audiences.

Question 1 of 3

Some reviewers have argued that True Detective's first season killed the entire franchise, simply for being so good. Earning the series 91% and 93% positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings from critics and audiences respectively, it is the only season that has not polarized critics and audiences. Even season 4, which starred Jodie Foster, received mediocre scores from its audience, but critics gave it a 93% positive score. That said, True Detective's Rotten Tomatoes ratings do not tell the full story, as the later seasons have been praised for their powerhouse acting performances, excellent casting, and bleak tone.

True Detective maintains its neo-noir atmosphere throughout its run, but brings in elements of other genres. Season 2, universally regarded as the weakest, still incorporated a crime thriller storyline. Season 3 returned to its Southern Gothic roots with characters haunted by their pasts, while season 4 finally leaned into the supernatural genre that had been hinted at before. It may not be fair to say that the other three seasons of the show are bad, merely outperformed by the quality of the first season. Now, True Detective may just be able to improve on it.

True Detective Could Finally Beat Its Groundbreaking First Season

True Detective has been confirmed for season 5, with the neo-noir masterpiece scheduled to begin production in 2027, with a planned release later in the year, or in early 2028. Season 4's director and writer Issa López will be heading the project, and having perfectly captured the tone and setting, she can address the issues viewers did not like, including callbacks to season 1 that didn't go anywhere, and its conclusion that some reviewers have described as "rushed." The acting in True Detective has always been excellent, but season 5's duo could hold the key to its success.

After much speculation, it has been confirmed that Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will play the show's central characters. Both have appeared in Gothic TV shows and movies, but Nicolas Cage seems born to star in True Detective, and casting him is a stroke of genius. Cage's signature overstated style works in a neo-noir, as his standout performance in Spider-Noir proved, and it is fair to assume that True Detective season 5 will remain dark. If lessons can be learned from previous seasons, the show might have found the winning formula it needs to improve on its game changing introduction.
