Jakarta aims for Net Zero Emissions by 2050, focuses on mobility

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 as part of its long-term strategy to reach Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized that the transportation sector remains the primary focal point of the decarbonization roadmap, as it currently contributes 52 percent of the capital's total direct emissions.

"Jakarta needs a mobility system that expands access, boosts productivity, reduces emissions, and connects the metropolitan area as a single economic entity," Pramono stated during the Indonesia International Transport Summit (IITS) 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday.

Pramono noted that the high level of emissions is directly tied to the public's heavy reliance on private vehicles, which continues to aggravate traffic congestion and deteriorate air quality.

To address the issue, the provincial government has set a target to increase the public transportation mode share to 55 percent by 2045 through a two-pronged approach.

The first leg of this framework, known as the Pull Strategy, focuses on enhancing the overall appeal and accessibility of public transit.

Under this initiative, the city is expanding TransJabodetabek, MRT, and LRT networks, while developing Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) hubs, upgrading pedestrian and cycling facilities, as well as offering free transit services to 15 designated community groups.

Complementing these incentives, the Push Strategy actively discourages private vehicle reliance across the capital.

This measure restricts personal vehicle usage through the enforcement of the odd-even traffic rule, parking disincentives for non-emissions-compliant vehicles, Low Emission Zones (LEZ), and the planned implementation of an Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system.

In addition to fleet electrification, the administration is actively encouraging behavioral shifts within the bureaucracy, including mandatory public transit use on Wednesdays and bicycle commuting on Fridays for all Jakarta civil servants.

"The Jakarta Provincial Government is also accelerating the green transition through electrification of public transportation," Pramono added.
