Outlander: Blood of My Blood star teases Brian's season 2 dynamic as unexpected fight unfolds in episode 2

Last week's Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere certainly kept us gripped, but this week's second episode just goes to show that there's really no guessing what will happen next.

Not only were Brian (Jamie Roy) and Ellen (Harriet Slater) left helping their clans prepare for the Jacobite rebellion, but we saw things reach quite the unexpected fever pitch as rising tensions meant things got unexpectedly physical.

That's right, the usual level-headed and calm Brian was involved in a fist fight with Ellen's brother Dougal (Sam Retford), later promising Fraser men that he will fight with the MacKenzies for the Jacobites.

But why the newfound (but understandable) aggression on Brian's part?

Chatting exclusively to Radio Times about the way in which Brian reacted in this episode, Roy shared: "I think season 1, Brian spent a lot of the time kind of getting pushed over a lot of the time when he could have stood up for himself – but he decided not to. He decided to restrain himself because of the effect that could have had on the people closest to him.

"So, for instance, his mum or Julia would have been scared of the repercussions that would have happened if he had stood up to Lovat, or whatever. Now I think since he's found Ellen, he's got more to fight for and that's the most important person in his life."

He continued: "So now he's like, ‘Yeah, if you're going to push me, I'll come and I'll push you back. I'll push you back harder. Like I've got nothing to lose now’. Well, I've got everything to lose now. But that's worth fighting and putting everything on the line for.

"So yeah, if Dougal’s going to throw a punch, you’re damn straight that Brian's going to throw a harder one back."

Whilst things on Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry's (Jeremy Irvine) side of the story continue to be wrapped up in time travel heartbreak, it seems as though things are very much grounded in the one time period for Brian and Ellen – but that doesn't make things any less complicated for the pair.

The rebellion is on its way and Ellen continues to have to think on her feet in relation to her brothers, with Brian having to step up to fight when all he really wants to do is run away with Ellen.

Teasing what's to come as the season goes on, Slater told Radio Times: "I think season 1 was… it felt like a very young love, and it was all about the passion and the yearning and the fleeting moments that they had together.

"Whereas season two is more about them as an established couple knowing exactly what they want in life, and that is each other. So yeah, the stakes are higher. It's life and death, but on an even bigger scale."
