Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler transform for Miami Vice '85.
The Miami Vice franchise is a landmark 1980s American TV phenomenon that redefined police dramas through iconic fashion and MTV-inspired cinematography. The original starred Don Johnson as Detective James "Sonny" Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs. The franchise earned 20 Emmy nominations and 4 wins during its run, leading to movie adaptations and video games. Now, two of Hollywood's beloved leading men take on the iconic roles.
First official images have been unveiled of Jordan and Butler as Tubbs and Crockett, with a whole new look. Miami Vice '85 is the second film reboot of the franchise, following the 2006 movie Miami Vice directed by the original EP Michael Mann. The cast also includes Walton Goggins, Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, and Danny Ramirez. It will be directed by Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, with Nightcrawler's Dan Gilroy writing the screenplay.
Miami Vice '85 will be shot in IMAX, with production expected to begin very soon, taking place in both Miami and New York. It was reported that The Odyssey's John Leguizamo has also joined the cast as the movie's main villain. The movie is said to explore the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami in a new version of the property, inspired by the pilot episode of the flagship television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.
The original movie adaptation, released in 2006, cast Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs, but sadly only earned a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
