Paul Wesley Finally Becomes The Real Captain Kirk In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: “Now, There’s No Hesitation” (Exclusive)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4's finale, "Tomorrow's Enterprise," lets Lieutenant Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) switch places with her future self on Captain Kirk's Starship Enterprise. It's the first time Strange New Worlds has shown Paul Wesley as the real Captain Kirk, the same Jim originated by William Shatner, after Paul played different alternate-reality versions of Captain Kirk in prior seasons.

Speaking to ScreenRant's John Orquiola, Paul Wesley revealed the crucial difference between Captain Kirk and his younger version, Lieutenant (later Lt. Commander) Kirk, that he played on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Wesley described how, as captain, Kirk can show "no hesitation" to his crew, which is something his younger self struggled with but learned from Anson Mount's Captain Christopher Pike. ScreenRant: You played a couple of alternate-reality Captain Kirks, but in the finale for season 4, you really are him now. You're the captain.

Paul Wesley: “Ah, yes, yes.”

ScreenRant: Did it feel like a process over the four seasons to get to that point? And what was it finally like to be Captain Kirk?

Paul Wesley: “It's just one of these situations where, and this is something that I learned from Anson, actually: When you're in charge, and everyone is looking to you to make decisions, you have to commit to those decisions and make decisions, even if you don't know yourself if they're the right ones. That is something that, when I played the real version of Kirk in the finale, it was just a matter of, ‘Okay, now, there's no hesitation.’ I can hesitate in my subconscious. I can hesitate perhaps in a scene where I'm confiding something and I want to show vulnerability. But in front of my crew, I will always be confident, and that is something that I think Lieutenant Kirk didn't understand.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is about Captain Pike's five-year mission leading the Starship Enterprise, but it has also been an origin story for James Kirk, the next Captain. Paul Wesley's Prime timeline Jim Kirk began as a cocky Lieutenant who learned the finer aspects and responsibilities of commanding a starship when he was promoted to Lt. Commander and First Officer of the USS Farragut.

Kirk's many visits to the USS Enterprise saw him benefit firsthand from watching Captain Pike and his Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), in action. Kirk's mettle as a starship captain was tested in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 6, "The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail," and James passed with flying colors, setting the stage for his destiny as Captain of the Enterprise.

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4's finale, Wesley plays Captain Kirk as comfortable in the center seat, although he's still sorting the proper amount of personal and professional distance between a captain and his crew. As Paul explained, Kirk's decision-making is absolute when his mind is made up, and he projects strength and authority to his crew, while allowing himself to be vulnerable in private.

Unfortunately, Paul Wesley told ScreenRant that he doesn't think Star Trek: Year One, the Captain Kirk spinoff of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds proposed by executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers is "ever gonna happen." However, Wesley will gladly play Captain Kirk again if Paramount+ greenlights Star Trek: Year One.

"Tomorrow's Enterprise" plays like a backdoor pilot for Star Trek: Year One, and Paul Wesley proves he has the swagger and command authority to play an excellent Captain Kirk, honoring William Shatner but making the role his own. Thankfully, Wesley will play Captain Kirk one more time in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' series finale after the fifth and final season premieres on Paramount+ in 2027.
