Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the city government would withhold payment to a contractor over allegedly defective repairs at Burnham Lake.
In a post on Saturday, the Baguio City Public Information Office quoted Magalong as saying he was dissatisfied with the contractor’s work and that payment would be withheld until the repairs were properly completed.
“We are not accepting it until they fix it properly,” Magalong said.
“Ang importante rito, hindi binabayaran at hindi ninanakaw yung pera, ibinubulsa at may porsiyento. Hindi natin ginagawa iyan,” he added.
(What is important here is that they are not being paid, the money is not being stolen or pocketed, and no kickbacks are involved. We do not do that.)
He said that the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) was also withholding payment.
Burnham Lake was closed for repairs in October 2025 and reopened in September 2026.
A month after the reopening, Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said he was dissatisfied with the contractor’s work.
Neither the Baguio City Public Information Office nor Magalong identified the contractor. However, a notice of award for the P98.92-million rehabilitation of Burnham Park named a joint venture between Dungan Constructors & Trading Corp. and Moment Diagram Builders.
GMA News Online has reached out to both contractors for comment and will update this story once they respond. —VBL, GMA News
