Toronto CEO David Morton and his daughters, Maggie Zohil-Morton and Cristina Zohil-Morton, were shot in a violent home invasion in the city’s Bridle Path neighbourhood early Thursday morning, according to multiple media reports that identified the family.

Morton and one of his daughters remain in hospital with life-altering injuries, police said.

Three masked suspects entered the residence with guns and a hammer just before 4 a.m. “A struggle ensued during this altercation in which the suspects fired their guns multiple times, and one victim was struck with a hammer,” said Toronto Police Service Insp. Kristy Smith, speaking at a news conference Thursday.

Morton’s wife and other daughter suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Morton, 75, is listed as the CEO of the MAC Group on the company’s website. His bio says that he graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University’s Hospitality and Tourism program. His wife, Doriana Zohil-Morton, is the MAC Group’s president. Their daughter Maggie, who has a Bachelor of Arts in health studies from Queen’s University and a Master of Arts in health promotion from Dalhousie University, also works at the company in various fields, including sales, operations, and marketing, it says online.

Cristina is the founder of Zohil-Morton Law, focused on immigration. She attended university in England and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2024, according to the firm’s website.

Toronto Police Service told National Post it does not identify victims of crimes. However, several media outlets reported about the family, including Global News, the New York Post and People Magazine.

The MAC Group did not respond to a request for comment.

Police have not revealed a motive, although Smith said the suspects demanded “valuables from within the home.” She said that she believes that the home was chosen due to its location in an affluent neighbourhood and no information at this time indicated that it was targeted. Police have not released any suspect information.

The suspects drove away from the scene in an SUV but Smith said, at this time, police do not know where it went.

“We recognize how frightening and disturbing an incident like this is,” said Smith. She added that there would be an increased police presence in the area during the investigation.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow posted on X that she was “deeply troubled” by the incident.

“My thoughts are with the family and their loved ones, who are going through something no family should ever have to face. I am praying for their full recovery,” she wrote.

In May 2024, a person was arrested after trying to gain access to Canadian rapper Drake’s $100-million Bridle Path home. Earlier that week, a security guard was injured after a person shot at the house. The latter was believed to be fuelled by a feud between Drake and another rapper.
