Tottenham get new red card review as Leeds defender escapes punishment

Jayden Bogle should have been shown a red card during Leeds United’s win over Tottenham, says former Premier League referee Keith Hackett.

Replays showed the the Leeds defender had landed his studs on the Frenchman’s left Achilles, but - to the surprise of many - avoided any punishment from referee John Brooks.

In fact, VAR reviewed the challenge for around four minutes and ultimately deemed it did not meet the threshold for serious foul play.

Meanwhile, upon reviewing the incident himself, Hackett believes the nature of the challenge should have resulted in a red card.

“This challenge should frankly always be red carded,” he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

“The Achilles is a very vulnerable area and the safety of the player must be taken into account.”

On the incident, though, Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi said he still had full confidence in VAR and insisted his side could not blame the officials for the result at Elland Road.

“No, I have big confidence in the referee,” De Zerbi said when asked if he would have wanted referee John Brooks to go to the monitor to look at Bogle’s challenge.

“Nothing changes if he goes to watch the clip or not. I think there was the VAR, and if they didn’t take the right decision, I don’t know. But we have confidence, we have to keep our eyes on the performance where we can improve.”
