Oriental Mindoro power rates drop P1.72/kWh for August

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Oriental Mindoro’s electricity rates have gone down by P1.7281 per kilowatt-hour this month from June, driven by lower generation costs, a significant rise in renewable energy output and reduced reliance on expensive emergency power providers (EPPs), the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Ormeco) said Friday, Aug. 21.
Ormeco general manager Humphrey Dolor said the overall rate decrease was driven by a drop in total generation expenses, which fell by 13.38 percent — from P492.34 million in July to P426.45 million in August.
“Renewable energy generation surged by 64.44 percent, rising from 3.69 million kWh in July to 6.07 million kWh in August. This boosted the share of renewables in the energy mix from 8.57 percent to 15.54 percent, helping displace more costly power sources,” Dolor said.

Meanwhile, power drawn from EPPs fell sharply by 47.50 percent — from 9.73 million kWh to 5.11 million kWh — cutting the EPP share from 22.59 percent to 13.07 percent, further reducing overall costs.
However, the effective rate for August stands at P16.5626/kWh after adding two adjustments: the recovery of deferred power costs and VAT from May 2026, amounting to P1.5229/kWh, and the recovery of excess energy purchases from Power One Corporation and Power Pioneers JW&D Corporation, adding P0.4474/kWh.
The power provider also said that a P38-million deferred power cost from July 2026 will be recovered over two billing periods starting this month, while the P97-million deferred cost from May has been fully collected. /das
