Titans QB Cam Ward needs a signature moment. He missed one against New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Wind and rain swirled around Cam Ward's slumped shoulders as he exited the field.

The Tennessee Titans quarterback seemed to know he flushed a golden opportunity into the MetLife Stadium gutter with his game-sealing interception in Tennessee's 12-7 loss against the New York Giants on Sept. 27.

In his second season Ward, the NFL's 2025 No. 1 overall draft pick, still lacks a signature NFL win.

On an otherwise clutch late-game offensive drive, this was his chance revive an offense that was historically bad in the first half, steal a victory and maybe ignite momentum for the Titans (0-3) in a big-picture way.

He's still searching for that win.

"(In the final two minutes) that's when you know your teammates need you the most," Ward told reporters in a musty room under the stadium. "That's when you have to be on your P's and Q's the most. The last play of the game, I wasn't."

With 24 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Ward snapped the ball on 1st-and-goal from the Giants 7-yard line, ran to his left from the pocket and faced several options.

● Throw to Elic Ayomanor in the back of the end zone.

● Throw the ball way.

● Run out of bounds.

● Run to the end zone if he felt frisky.

● Slide to the ground (the Titans had two timeouts).

Ward chose to test his arm and threw his first interception of the 2026 season in 209 attempts. That was a hot statistic discussed during the week. Ward was the only player in team history to have thrown 11 TDs with one or fewer interceptions in an 11-game span.

Was Ward throwing fewer interceptions because of conservative playcalling or because he's a good decision-maker?

We may not know that answer yet. We do know the most important decision he made in Week 3 went completely awry.

"Just be smarter with the football," Titans coach Robert Saleh said. "We've got two timeouts … we're gonna score. You don't need to force it in that situation. And unfortunately, it happened."

What happened on Cam Ward interception vs. Giants?

The Titans had all the momentum on their last drive as Ward squared his shoulders and targeted Ayomanor. But Giants safety Jevón Holland — the young 2026 season's NFL leader in interceptions (3) — had eagle eyes.

Ward's brain didn't suddenly go blank. He was confident he could make the throw. Ayomanor said that he felt he was open.

"I just thought I was getting past (Holland). I seen him (Holland)," Ward said. "I just thought I could get it over him, but he made a great play."

A Titans touchdown wouldn't have exactly been the Music City Miracle. But this team isn't picky about wins. It's 6-31 over the last 37 games. Saleh still doesn't own a victory as Titans' coach, and worse yet, he should probably have two this season.

The entire loss doesn't belong to Ward. A team doesn't go almost an entire first half without a first down solely because of quarterback play.

There are other issues. The Titans' special teams units are starting to look like the biggest among them. The Titans have struggled on kickoffs and kick returns, which really should be low-hanging fruit for teams fallen on hard times.

Those aren't Ward's problems.

But he needs a golden moment. There were multiple chances to do it in New Jersey.

His biggest miss against the Giants might have actually been overthrowing a wide-open Carnell Tate in the end zone in the third quarter. No one in the postgame thought to ask if the rain affected that pass, only because his interception later stole the headlines.

Maybe Ward's signature day is coming. Maybe his signature days are coming.

What might eat at the 24-year-old quarterback this week is he must wait another Sunday to find out.
