Sarawak authorities seize over 80kg of meth disguised as cat litter

The Sarawak customs department has foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 80kg of methamphetamine worth around RM4 million into the state.

Sarawak customs director Norizan Yahya said the drugs were seized after 12 days of surveillance of parcels declared as “tofu cat litter”.

He said officers began monitoring the parcels on Aug 28 after receiving intelligence.

“No one came forward to claim the parcels throughout the 12 days of monitoring,” he was quoted as saying by the Borneo Post today.

He said a subsequent inspection found compacted lumps suspected to be methamphetamine.

“Investigations showed that a syndicate used commercial courier services to bring the drugs into Bintulu, falsely declaring the contents as cat litter and using false recipient details to avoid detection,” he said.

Norizan said the case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, which provides for the death penalty or 30 to 40 years’ imprisonment and no fewer than 12 strokes of the rotan.
