The Department of Agriculture (DA) said that it has completed a P30 million small water impounding project in Tabuk City, Kalinga, which could help supply irrigation to farmers amid the ongoing El Niño phenomenon.

The El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to persist until the first half of 2027, is projected to bring record-breaking high temperatures.

The DA said that the Bulo-Magasusu Small Water Impounding Project in Barangay Bulo in Tabuk City, Kalinga is expected to help 35 farmers who are cultivating 85 hectares of land during the dry season.

“This project—one of many the DA had envisioned-would help address one of the biggest uncertainties confronting farmers, particularly those whose livelihoods depend on increasingly unpredictable weather patterns,” DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said in a statement.

Tiu Laurel urged the association to maintain the facility and ensure that future generations could benefit from it.

The DA Secretary said that the agency would continue to pursue projects that raise crop yields, reduce production costs and improve farmers’ income.

The facility covers 85 hectares of land, with a pond spanning 18 hectares and a watershed measuring 177 hectares. There is also a 13-meter-high dam, a 1.75-kilometer irrigation canal, and a 94-meter outlet pipe.

Tiu Laurel thanked the Magasuso Small Water Impounding System Association for its help in completing the facility. —Jean Mangaluz/LDF, GMA News
