Not too long after James Gunn and Peter Safran officially launched the DC Universe under Warner Bros.' newly formed DC Studios, questions started to rise about their long-term future. The co-CEOs had a multi-year plan in place to create a multimedia superhero franchise, but whether they'd get to see those through became unclear once Warner Bros. went up for sale.
Question 1 of 3
When Paramount agreed to buy Warner Bros. in early 2026, the DCU was still riding high off of Superman's $600+ million box office performance the summer before. Since then, Supergirl came out in theaters and became a box office bomb, while Lanterns became a streaming sensation on HBO Max. Despite the DCU mostly delivering wins under Gunn and Safran's leadership, their fates post-merger remained up in the air.
The fear for DC fans was that Skydance boss David Ellison would want to put his stamp on Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the DC Comics library by bringing in different creatives to replace Gunn and Safran and rebooting the franchise, again. These fears lingered even as reports that Ellison was keen on keeping them around, even visiting Man of Tomorrow's set to talk to Gunn.
Thankfully, it's now been officially confirmed that Gunn and Safran will stick around after the Paramount and Warner Bros. merger concludes. Gunn even shared the above video on Instagram made by Skydance to promote the vast library now under one roof, which included a scene from Superman. That leaves no doubt about Gunn's DCU future and helps the franchise avoid a death sentence.
James Gunn's DC Universe Continuing Is Necessary
Skydance is making the best choice in keeping Gunn's DCU going. This franchise is still very young, but the early results have been promising. Supergirl aside, audiences have proven to be very interested in what is happening with DC's movies and shows. It only makes sense for this continuity to continue and see where Gunn can take it from here.
There is also a practical reason for the DCU to continue: multiple more movies and shows are already coming. Clayface is coming out in just over a month. Gunn's Man of Tomorrow is already done filming and heading to theaters in 2027 as the franchise's biggest tentpole to date. On the TV side, The People v. Gorilla Grodd is actively filming, while animated shows like Creature Commandos season 2 and Mister Miracle are deep in production.
Rebooting the DCU post-Paramount/WB merger would take time and leave each of these projects as dead on arrival. Audiences would be less interested in checking them out if they know a reboot is coming. Just look at what happened to the final DCEU movies at the box office once Gunn and Safran's reboot plan became clear.
Another DC Reboot Would Have Been Devastating
Beyond the practicality of considering the DCU's upcoming movies and shows or wanting Gunn to get a fair crack at seeing this universe through, it's also worth noting how damaging another DC reboot would be. There is no real chance that Skydance and Ellison would oust Gunn and Safran only for someone else to come in and continue the continuity. A full reset would be what transpires, and the DC brand can't handle that.
Fans have been asked to get excited for multiple iterations of a DC franchise over the last decade or so. There was the SnyderVerse, the post-Snyder DCEU (which had different creatives involved), and now the DCU. It would be difficult for many to watch another reset occur, major characters be recast again, and have to listen to promises of a new 10-year plan that may never come to fruition.
Thankfully, we've avoided all of that with Gunn and Safran sticking around to continue leading the DC Universe. With the merger now complete, hopefully the executives will have more freedom to push new projects into development, sign deals with talent, and really start plotting the next several years of DC movies and shows.
