MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area inside the Philippine area of responsibility has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within 24 hours, PAGASA said Tuesday morning, August 18.
In its 8 a.m. bulletin, the state weather bureau said it was tracking the system, designated the name "LPA 08f."
The agency is also monitoring a second low-pressure area, "LPA 08g," outside the PAR. It likewise has a high chance of strengthening into a tropical depression within the same period.
A tropical depression outside the PAR is also under watch, PAGASA said.
Rains from the southwest monsoon (habagat) have continued to swamp Metro Manila and nearby provinces for weeks. Yesterday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority recorded 201.7 millimeters of rain in the metro from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., nearly half of the total rainfall volume from Ondoy in 2009 (455 mm).
Several students and workers were caught in the downpour and left stranded due to floodwaters choking major thoroughfares.
