Why did Anantjeet, Parinaaz win Asian Games 2026 bronze despite levelling scores with Korea in skeet mixed team?

India won its first ever medal in skeet mixed team shooting after Anantjeet Singh Naruka and Parinaaz Dhaliwal won bronze at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The Indian duo scored 44 in the final to tie with eventual silver medallist Korea after 24 shots. But the bronze medal was awarded to India without a shoot-off to decide which team gets to progress further.

To understand why this happened one has to refer to 9.18.4.2 of the latest edition of the ISSF rulebook which came into effect from July 1.

Point ‘b’ in the said section says: “In case there’s a tie up to and including this stage [when the third place is decided], the lowest Finals Start number wins. Finals Start Number 1 is the lowest Start Number, Start Number 4 is the highest Start Number.”

It is understood that a lower Finals Start number is awarded to the team which had done better in the qualifications. India, having finished fourth in the qualification with 138 points, was assigned a higher Start number than Korea, which had finished second with 143 points.
