The Great British Bake Off sent home its second contestant on Tuesday evening as the Channel 4 show aired the first ever Audience Choice Week.

The 17th season of the much-loved Channel 4 show kicked off last month, with a new group of bakers desperate to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson, who has replaced Prue Leith after she quit earlier this year.

In a Bake Off first, the baker's relatives were invited into the tent for the first challenge as the hopefuls were tasked with making an exquisite cheesecake.

All three of the challenges set tonight (6 October) were chosen by viewer's tuning in at home, and sadly it was Shannon who failed to progress to the next round of the competition, while Clara was named Star Baker.

Upon learning her fate, a tearful Shannon said: "It's so hard to put into words what this has meant to me. I've really just been myself. It's been life changing, that is the word."

Viewers were quick to share their thoughts on X as one person said: "Aw shannon! she seems like such a lovely person as well."

Another wrote: "Love that for Clara!! But no Shannon my queen," and a third posted: "Absolutely the right person to go though. it just wasn’t her week."

Even Nigella felt sad as she admitted: "I can't get used to the fact that someone has to go home."

Meanwhile, Moyin was lucky enough to get a handshake from Paul this week after the judge tasted the "perfect" cheesecake he'd made with the help of his mum.

Elsewhere in the latest episode of Bake Off, the contestants got the chance to make whatever they wanted in the Technical Challenge, in another first for the show. And then for the Showstopper Challenge they had to make something "wearable" such as a hat.

The next episode of Bake Off will see the remaining contestants tackle Bread Week.

The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays on Channel 4 at 8:00pm.
