Power's Next Spinoff Is One Last Chance To Revive The Franchise

When Power first burst onto the scene, it was a promising crime drama that only continued to grow in quality and popularity, eventually becoming one of the best of its era. Between its intense storylines, complex characters, and mind-blowing twists, it's no surprise the series became Starz's flagship show before it finally concluded in 2020 after six seasons.

Despite the main story coming to an end, Power continued through a variety of spinoffs. Both Book II: Ghost and Book IV: Force have come to an end while Book III: Raising Kanan continues, but despite the quality of these projects, Power simply isn't as popular as it once was, and it's running out of time to revive itself.

While Power: Origins is up next for the franchise — a prequel involving Ghost and Tommy's origin story — it's Power: Legacy that offers the last real chance to bring the crime series back into the limelight. The prequel may be intriguing enough to pique some viewers' curiosity, but Legacy feels like an official sequel to the original show.

It is set to bring back some of the Power franchise's best characters, as Joseph Sikora will reprise his role as Tommy, while Michael Rainey Jr. is also coming back as Tariq. Seeing these two key figures reunite is big for the future, and it also opens the door to other big returns, offering Power: Legacy the chance to be a true continuation.

For as enjoyable as the spinoffs are, they don't feel like an essential watch since they largely focus on individual characters. In contrast, Legacy could theoretically act as a seventh season, meaning if fans don't show any interest, it's unlikely that Power will ever regain the audience it once had, putting massive pressure on this upcoming project.

Power: Legacy Needs To Bring Back Omari Hardwick As Ghost

Of all the ways Power: Legacy could win viewers over, bringing back Omari Hardwick's Ghost is by far the most effective method. As the original show's main character, James "Ghost" St. Patrick proved to be a fan favorite, as despite his ruthless and selfish personality, he remained compelling throughout all six seasons.

Sadly, he was killed off in the final season, with the last few episodes uncovering who was responsible for killing him and why. The concept worked, but fans were left unsatisfied with the reveal, ending Ghost's legacy on a sour note. As a result, Power: Legacy feels like the right time to make amends, as Ghost's return would surely entice viewers.

For years, fans have speculated that Power's protagonist faked his death and would return in one of the various spinoffs, yet it has never happened. Now, more than enough time has passed for this twist to actually be a shock, and with Power: Force's ending perfectly setting up Legacy, Ghost being involved would make it unmissable.

Seeing him confront his son and former best friend would add so much depth to the series, especially given their history, and watching these three main characters back on screen together would feel like a proper Power revival. It would also be a great way of marketing the spinoff once the surprise is revealed.

Considering Ghost was the heartbeat of Power, it's hard to imagine too many viewers being overly upset about undoing his divisive ending, and Legacy could offer him a better sendoff. Therefore, Omari Hardwick's involvement is essential for getting the most out of this project, as he is the key to bringing the franchise back to its best.

The Power Franchise Is Still Good Enough To Make A Full Comeback

Naturally, some people may believe Power has had its day and can never reach the same heights as it did during its peak, but the franchise is still strong enough to make a complete comeback. Although popularity seemed to decline after the main show ended, the quality did not, with Power: Book Force being the prime example.

Across its three seasons, not a single episode has a rating below 8.0 on IMDb, showing the entire 30-episode run was of a very high standard. Raising Kanan and Ghost have lower lows, yet they remain largely consistent overall. Even if they don't quite match the original series, Power's spinoffs are severely underrated crime dramas that deserve more love.

It's easy to take one look at them and think they could be tiring or a cheap imitation of 2014's Power, but they have far more depth than meets the eye, with each one possessing its own unique set of qualities. The fact that Joseph Sikora and Michael Rainey Jr. are both still involved also proves the franchise hasn't been diluted.

Interesting new characters have made their way into the spotlight, but even six years after the main show wrapped up, Power is still about the same set of criminals we've followed from the start. With plenty still to offer and Power: Legacy in the works, the IP is only a few steps away from having a potentially huge resurgence.

So, if Power: Origins makes a good impression and continues the standard of quality that has existed for over a decade, Power: Legacy has a good chance of succeeding. Add in the potential return of Ghost, and there is no reason Power can't once again rise to the top and be one of the best crime franchises out there.
