Marshals Is At Risk Of Losing Kayce Dutton's Monica Replacement

Monica Dutton may be irreplaceable, but the closest thing Kayce Dutton's (Luke Grimes) found on Marshals is at risk after the most recent episode. Throughout the first season of Marshals, it was tough for viewers to wrap their minds around the fact that Kayce and Tate had lost Monica, who passed between the end of Yellowstone and the beginning of the CBS spinoff. As both dealt with their grief, it was clear Marshals would continue Kayce's story with Monica's memory, but would open him up to other love interests in the future, should he want to pursue a new relationship.

Within the first season, the person Kayce seemed most comfortable with within his team was Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos), and though nothing romantic happened between them, there was a clear connection between the characters. As Marshals season 2 has begun to unfold, Kayce and Andrea's connection has grown somewhat stronger. From Andrea's decision not to leave Montana for a job opportunity in Washington, D.C. to their rapport in the most recent episode as they pursued a case together, the pair has proven that they've developed a stronger bond. If there's to be a replacement Monica in Kayce's life, it's most likely to be Andrea.

Unfortunately, there's a snag in the fabric of the pair's possible relationship. Between Andrea's storyline this season, which has accentuated the weight of her past trauma, and the fact that Marshals season 2 episode 4, "Blast Radius", left her life in the balance, it's possible she's in danger moving forward.

The end of Marshals season 2 episode 4, "Blast Radius", left Kayce and Andrea in the eye of an actual blast as they tried to pursue Rudy Carpenter (Braxton Hale), who's been on the marshals radar before. After appearing in Marshals season 1 and getting away, Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) spent the majority of the episode chasing down his great white whale, but it was Kayce and Andrea who made their way into the makeshift testing site. The pair, who had been talking more openly about what was coming next for them individually throughout the episode, are a well-oiled machine, but weren't ready for what they found.

While Kayce and Andrea have eyes on Rudy, who's clearly gravely injured, they don't anticipate that he's about to detonate one of his homemade devices. With no time to escape, the episode ends with the explosion ringing out, fading to a black screen with a dreaded "To Be Continued..." scrawled across it. Although it's unlikely that Marshals will kill off Kayce or Andrea at this juncture, they're both in serious danger, and after hearing Kayce praise Andrea's potential to take over for Cal while he's on medical leave, the disaster could change just about everything.

Question 1 of 3

Andrea's Issues Have Been Present, But This Disaster Could Solidify Them

Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz in Marshals

Throughout Marshals season 2 thus far, viewers have seen Andrea grappling with the trauma of her kidnapping in several instances. The show's been upfront that there are still issues she has yet to work through, and though she's back at work and doing well, Andrea isn't comfortable in a confined space after what she went through. Not only is dealing with another trauma in general not going to be great for Andrea, but dealing with the impact of a blast that could trap her in any way would be a complete setback to any of the work she's done post-kidnapping.

Andrea's issues have been tough to watch play out, and while knowing that she's aware of them makes it clear she's planning to work on them is great, it isn't the same as actually working through what's happening. Being trapped in any way could be a massive tipping point for Andrea, and while Kayce may be able to reassure her or keep her calm, the trauma of something so intense could derail her completely. Marshals hasn't been a show that's pulled its punches when it comes to trauma for its characters, so it's possible that Kayce's potential Monica replacement may have even more to deal with this season.
