Due to the seriousness of the crime he is charged with, Lawrence Mudgingyama, the businessman filmed lambasting and threatening women in the bathroom of a Johannesburg restaurant, has had to appear in court and post bail.

The incident occurred at the Vlamo Restaurant on 18 September.

Mudgingyama was first arrested on 20 September at the Randburg police station, where he was released on a warning and told to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

At the time, he was released on a warning for a single charge of intimidation. However, according to prosecutor Yusus Baba, when they consulted with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the State changed the charges.

Mudgingyama’s list of charges now includes three counts of intimidation, three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, three counts of crimen iniuria for calling the women “a whore”, and a count of fraud for impersonating the owner of the restaurant.

While the State asked for R5 000 bail, Magistrate Liesl Davis raised the amount to R15 000 due to the seriousness of the crime.
