We Can’t Always Rely On Our Front Three — Colwill Admits After Chelsea’s 3-0 Hammering By Brentford

Levi Colwill has said he and his Chelsea teammates cannot always rely on their front three of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro, stating that there must be an improvement defensively.

Colwill made this known after Chelsea’s winless run in the Premier League extended to three matches following a 3-0 thrashing by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night.

After a promising start to life under Xabi Alons, Chelsea have picked up just one point from their last three league games.

Goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho took unbeaten Brentford above their west London neighbours and up to third in the table.

Chelsea had quickly earned the reputation as the Premier League’s great entertainers under Alonso with their opening four games containing 19 goals.

But the loss of Joao Pedro to a knee injury subdued the Blues’ free-flowing attack as Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers were comfortably kept in check by the Bees.

Alonso made four changes in all, handing Jordan Henderson his first Chelsea start against the 36-year-old’s former club.

The Spanish coach got his wish during a flat first half in which neither goalkeeper was seriously tested, but Brentford were the more threatening side in the second period.

Reflecting on the disappointing defeat, Colwill said:”It was tough. Maybe we overexposed ourselves [at 1-0 down] and they hit us on the counter-attack, which they’re so good at.

“Second half we weren’t good enough. We’ve got a lot to work on over the international break. Maybe at times we’ve been bullied [at set-pieces] and we have to improve at that. We can’t rely on our front three to pull us of danger — we all need to help each other. We’ve got a lot of room to improve.”

The defeat leaves the Blues in seventh position on seven points and are now five points behind leaders Arsenal, who can go eight points clear if they beat Brighton today (Saturday).
