Created by Frida Redknapp, the Swedish-born model and wife of footballer-turned-pundit Jamie Redknapp, this dried-food blend (one of four flavours) promises the equivalent of 560g raw veg per pack, plus grains, seeds and plant proteins. When cooked with your choice of protein in a little oil and water, you have a ‘convenient, fibre-rich dinner’ in under 20 minutes.

What’s the science?

Manufactured in the UK, the ingredients are dehydrated to help preserve nutrients, flavour and shelf life, with no added sugar. All the Frood blends are free of UPFs (ultra-processed foods, eg additives, emulsifiers, colourings or artificial flavours) and are made without oil or heat. This pack includes dehydrated tomatoes, peppers, spinach, carrots, onion, garlic and celery root, as well as paprika, ground cumin and cayenne.

What’s the point?

Frood is designed to be a modern, cost-effective cooking aid for busy people. Redknapp hopes to redefine convenience food to make it as healthy as it is easy, without spending money and time sourcing, chopping and cooking extra veggies, grains or seeds. Kristen Stavridis, a nutritionist and author of The Fibre Fix, thinks Frood is a standout on the ready-meal market. ‘It’s healthy, high in fibre and contains a range of plant foods, helping people hit 30 plants a week.’ But is dried as good as fresh? ‘Fresh is always superior,’ she says. ‘But a product like this can still deliver health benefits.’

What’s the verdict?

My meal took around 15 minutes to prepare, stirred with a cooked chicken breast and served with rice for a burrito bowl. I also threw in peppers and onion for crunch and extra seasoning – salt, pepper and smoked paprika – to ramp up the flavour. It was fast, tasty, filling and felt healthier than a standard ready meal.
