Serie A | Genoa 2-1 Fiorentina: De Rossi drags Viola into danger zone

Genoa finally earned their first victory of the Serie A season with Milutin Osmajic and Junior Messias, pulling Fiorentina right back into the relegation zone.
This was a relegation tussle between two historically big clubs who have struggled in recent years. Daniele De Rossi was under immense pressure after one point from five rounds, forced to do without injured Lorenzo Colombo, Alex Amorim, Djibril Sow, Franz-Ethan Meichtry, Elias Havel and Lorenzo Venturino.
The Viola were revitalised by the return of Paolo Vanoli, beating Venezia and holding Napoli to a draw. Arthur Atta and Fabiano Parisi remained on the treatment table, with squad rotation after international duty.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Genoa had an aggressive start and opened the scoring after seven minutes when David De Gea spilled the Stephan El Shaarawy scorcher from distance, as Mikael Ellertsson’s wayward effort on the rebound turned into an assist for Milutin Osmajic at the back post.
El Shaarawy also broke down the left and rolled across the face of goal, inches away from Osmajic and the far stick, but Luca Ranieri had a nightmare 60 seconds when he was booked for a high tackle on Junior Messias, then hit a fresh-air clearance on the Osmajic cross from the right, allowing the Brazilian to volley in from six yards.
Fiorentina did have the ball in the net with Willy Gnonto on 19 minutes thanks to a deflection, but Beto was flagged offside in the build-up.

De Gea made up for his error on the opening goal with a fantastic one-handed save on the El Shaarawy free kick, while Osmajic fired wide after gathering a long Messias ball.
Christ Inao Oulai scuffed a Gnonto cross wide on the half-volley after an awkward bounce, and a Ranieri header on a corner flashed across the face of goal.
Justin Bijlow was at full stretch to palm away the Franco Mastantuono left-foot curler, but Vanoli made two changes and reshuffled his system at half-time.
Fiorentina were predictable in their movement, but eventually got one back with a bit of luck when the Alex Jimenez low cross from the right was accidentally toe-poked into the near bottom corner by Johan Vasquez.

It should’ve been 2-2 soon after, but Cher Ndour ballooned over from 12 yards on a Mateo Pellegrino lay-off. Bijlow also used his legs to deny Alieu Njie’s pull-back from the tightest of angles, but Ndour was frustrated to see his screamer bounce off the upright, hit the goalkeeper on the back, and ricochet out again.
Fiorentina pushed to the end, Leo Ostigard practically clearing a Dodo floated cross off the line at the back post.
