Eastern Cape storms could disrupt electricity supplies on Saturday

Translate

Residents in parts of the Eastern Cape could face electricity and communication disruptions on Saturday, 31 October, as severe thunderstorms develop over the province’s northern interior.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms that could damage property and settlements and disrupt essential services.

The warning comes just days after heavy rain and strong winds damaged electricity infrastructure in several parts of the province.

Which areas face the thunderstorm warning?

SAWS has placed the northern interior of the Eastern Cape under a Yellow Level 1 warning.

The weather service expects isolated thunderstorms across the province’s interior, with scattered thunderstorms in northern areas.

The eastern half of the province could also experience isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

Not every area will experience severe weather, but residents in the warning area should prepare for possible disruptions.

How could thunderstorms affect electricity supplies?

Severe thunderstorms can damage electricity infrastructure in several ways.

Strong winds can bring down trees and branches onto power lines, while lightning can damage electrical equipment.

Storms can also damage electricity poles and other parts of the network, leaving homes and businesses without power.

The latest warning does not mean outages will definitely occur.

It highlights the possibility of localised disruptions where severe thunderstorms develop.

Eastern Cape still recovering from earlier storm damage

The latest warning follows severe weather that disrupted electricity supplies across parts of the Eastern Cape earlier this week.

On Tuesday, 27 October, Eskom confirmed that heavy rain and strong winds had damaged electricity infrastructure in several areas.

The affected municipalities included Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo, Amathole and Chris Hani, as well as Buffalo City.

Eskom reported damage to electricity poles, conductors and other network equipment.

The utility also said difficult road conditions were slowing repairs in some areas.

The earlier outages underline how severe weather can affect electricity supplies, even after the rain has stopped.

Residents should keep checking SAWS weather warnings and updates from Eskom or their local municipality as conditions change.
