La'an is coping with her hidden fears in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. After being turned into a Vulcan (or Romulan) in Strange New Worlds season 3's "Four-and-a-Half Vulcans," La'an fears that her latent augment DNA she inherited from her ancestor, Khan Noonien-Singh (Ricardo Montalban), is bringing out her darker impulses and turning her into a villain. La'an even ended her romance with Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck).

"Once La'an a Time" is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4's La'an-centric episode that looks like it will resolve the inner turmoil she's sufferedall season. However, "Once La'an a Time" is also another 'big swing' by Strange New Worlds; it's a fantastical fairy tale episode that's a sequel to Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 8, "The Elysian Kingdom."
In "The Elysian Kingdom," the USS Enterprise's crew is transformed into the characters in the favorite children's fantasy of Dr. M'Benga's daughter, Rukiya (Sage Arrindell). La'an became Princess Thalia, whose dog, Runa, is played by Christina Chong's real-life puppy, Runa Ewok. Chong hinted that "someone I love" is in La'an's season 4 episode, and she could mean Runa.
In "Once La'an a Time," the Kingdom of Elysian somehow becomes a real-life planet where the Starship Enterprise crew meets their fairy-tale counterparts. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4's San Diego Comic-Con sizzle reel even shows glimpses of La'an sword fighting with her fantasy doppelgänger, Princess Thalia.
La'an's fear of turning into Khan and her struggle with her dark side have been Lieutenant Noonien-Singh's primary arc since she debuted in Strange New Worlds' series premiere. Through the lens of fairy tales, "Once La'an a Time" may finally resolve La'an's greatest torment before sending her to her ultimate destiny in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' fifth and final season.
