Bailey bridge built after Calungbuyan Bridge closure in Ilocos Sur

SAN ILDEFONSO, ILOCOS SUR, Philippines — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has begun constructing a Bailey bridge in Santa, Ilocos Sur, to provide temporary access to residents and motorists after the Calungbuyan Bridge was closed due to damage caused by continuous rains.

Invented by British engineer Sir Donald Coleman Bailey in 1940, a Bailey bridge is a prefabricated single-lane bridge that can be installed relatively quickly using interchangeable, high-tensile steel panels.

In an advisory on Tuesday (Sept. 15), the DPWH Ilocos Sur 2nd District Engineering Office started the construction of the temporary bridge after damage was observed on the approach to the Calungbuyan Bridge, prompting authorities to close it for safety reasons.

The Bailey bridge is intended to provide an immediate alternative route for residents, commuters and motorists from Barangays Rancho, Dammay, Calungbuyan, Oribi and Casiber traveling to the Santa town proper.

DPWH said the temporary crossing will also ensure the continued transport of agricultural and other local products to markets and commercial areas despite the existing bridge’s closure.

The project follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure that affected communities have immediate access to safe and passable routes following the closure.

According to the DPWH, the temporary bridge will be put in place as quickly as possible while the damaged portion of the existing bridge is assessed and appropriate repairs or rehabilitation are undertaken. /cb
