Andy Burnham says politicians can ‘spot faithfuls and traitors a mile off’

Andy Burnham has stated that politicians can "spot faithfuls and traitors a mile off", ahead of making history as the first prime minister to feature on Channel 4’s Gogglebox.

The politician will watch the week’s television broadcasts in a special charity edition on Friday, appearing alongside Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool City Region.

When asked to give his view on The Celebrity Traitors series so far, he said: "Well, obviously, I would say that politicians have got a lot to offer to those who are looking for tactics in relation to The Traitors."

Mr Burnham, who took control from Sir Keir Starmer after plotting to become prime minister for more than a year, added: "I think we can spot faithfuls and traitors a mile off."

“Our profession teaches us to do that, but it’s a great programme.

“It’s a great example of how strong British broadcasting is, and of course the BBC.”

A trailer for the Gogglebox charity episode shows “good friends Andy and Steve” talking about crisps inside No 10.

Mr Burnham is no stranger to light-hearted media appearances.

He has ranked pub snacks in a video alongside Chancellor John Healey, and been quizzed about his career while on a stepladder.

But the Prime Minister said he makes “no apology” for trying to lead with a bit of “humour”.

Asked why he had decided to appear on Gogglebox, he said: “I’m proud to support Stand Up To Cancer, and that’s what we’re doing, myself and the mayor of the Liverpool City Region, by appearing.

“I make no apology for trying to lead with a bit of lightness at times, a bit of humour.

“That’s the way I go at things and connect with people as best I can.

“And perhaps if a few more people watch it tonight and then support Stand Up To Cancer, that will be job done.”

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage appeared in a Gogglebox spin-off in 2014 while leader of Ukip.

Asked if it was unfair for Mr Burnham to appear on the show without the leaders of other parties, a spokesman said: “Nigel has done it before and would happily do it again.”
