Ministry boosts sports tourism through international, national events

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism continues to promote the development of sports tourism across Indonesia through the hosting of national and international sports events.

“We hope to see more sports events held in Indonesia, which will naturally boost the country's name globally,” the ministry's Acting Deputy for Event Organization Development, Hafiz Agung Rifa, said in Jakarta on Friday.

Speaking after a press conference for the “OGFC Legends Manchester United 2008 vs Persija Legends” match, he noted that hosting such events demonstrates that Indonesia’s infrastructure and facilities are fully equipped for world-class competitions.

He added that while Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara—which frequently hosts MotoGP events—remains the primary hub for Indonesia's sports tourism, the ministry is actively encouraging sports events in other regions across the country.

“Numerous sports events have also been held beyond Mandalika. One of the most prominent ones is the Borobudur Marathon, which is another key focus for us, along with several other destinations,” Hafiz added.

Meanwhile, Acting Deputy for Industry and Investment at the Tourism Ministry, Rizki Handayani Mustafa, noted that as an ecosystem, sports tourism development requires collaboration with partners such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

She explained that because sports encompass various industries, the scope is expected to extend to merchandise and souvenirs, creating opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to participate.

“So we hope that it's not just the individual events that thrive, but that the broader sports tourism ecosystem grows as well,” Rizki said.

She added that travel packages should be prepared in advance for such events, allowing visitors, especially international tourists, to make the most of their trip by exploring various destinations across Indonesia.
