'Law & Order: SVU’s Biggest Episode Broke the Franchise's Most Frustrating 10-Year Trend

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit has thrived for years thanks to its ensemble cast, particularly Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni). Benson and Stabler's partnership was a major draw for SVU fans; most loved their deep trust, while others hoped for a potential romance to blossom. Naturally, audiences were shocked when Meloni departed the series after Season 12, since it marked the beginning of a seismic shift in SVU's storytelling. Eventually, Meloni returned as Stabler in the Season 22 episode "Return of the Prodigal Son."

That return was marked by tragedy, as Stabler's wife Kathy (Isabel Gillies) was severely wounded after a car bombing. Stabler believes that the bomb was meant for him, leading him to pursue vengeance once Kathy succumbs to her injuries. This puts him at odds with Benson, who's investigating the murder, but it also digs into unresolved issues between the pair. Eventually, they talk and, in the process, correct a decades-long mistake SVU hadn't addressed until then.

Stabler and Benson's Reunion Tackles a Long-Standing 'Law and Order: SVU' Issue

"Return of the Prodigal Son" builds to Stabler and Benson's conversation, but when it finally happens, Benson doesn't waste time letting her former partner know how much his absence hurt her. “You were the most, single most important person in my life, and you just disappeared," she tells him. Stabler's departure happened in the fallout of Law and Order: SVU's Season 13 finale, "Smoked," where he was forced to shoot a young woman after she started firing a gun into the SVU squadroom. The Season 14 premiere, "Scorched Earth," revealed that he left the NYPD, which served as a major emotional blow to Benson.

By finally letting Stabler and Benson discuss how his absence affected her, "Return of the Prodigal Son" closes the book on what was a gaping plot hole in Law and Order: SVU. It also sets the stage for another Law and Order spin-off, as it reveals that Stabler worked as a liaison for the NYPD while in Europe. Following Kathy's death, Stabler becomes the lead character of Law and Order: Organized Crime, where he joins the NYPD's Organized Crime Task Force to track down her killers. Though Law and Order: Organized Crime had a strong hook and a strong lead in Meloni, it was canceled after five seasons. Thankfully, it won't be the last time that Law and Order fans get to see Meloni as Stabler.

'Law and Order: SVU' Is Bringing Christopher Meloni Back For A Major Milestone

It turns out that "Return of the Prodigal Son" won't be the only Stabler-Benson reunion, as Christopher Meloni is set to return to Law and Order: SVU for Season 28. The timing couldn't be more perfect, as Season 28 will feature the series' landmark 600th episode​​​​​​; it will also be directed by Mariska Hargitay, making it a perfect reunion in more ways than one. While details on Stabler's return are scarce, Law and Order: SVU showrunner Michele Fazakas told TV Insider that she intends to touch on his connection with Benson and how both characters have changed over the years.

“You have to use him and bring him in with purpose...I think it’s important to service that relationship for me personally and also for the fans. It’s a super important relationship to Benson, and Benson is a different person than she was when I was on the show before. She has grown in so many different ways, and that relationship is very different, and Stabler is a different person. So, what are they now together?"

The events of "Return of the Prodigal Son" more than prove Fazakas' point, as they show that Stabler and Benson both grew into different people after his departure from SVU. But it also reminded viewers of their connection, which goes beyond a mere partnership as police officers. Meloni's return in Season 28 should build on that connection, and hopefully it ends on a better note than "Scorched Earth" did.
