James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. The first Call of Duty: Black Ops game really was brilliant in almost every regard. The story is one of the best we have seen in the series to date, the gunplay was tight, and the settings were exceptionally cinematic, all of which combined into a heady experience that most developers have struggled to recapture since.

The multiplayer was also very solid, and it continued that golden period of CoD lobbies that started in earnest with the fourth game. Black Ops also picked up many of the batons laid down by World at War and ran with them, most notably the presence of zombies, where players spent thousands of hours seeing just how far they could push it before being overwhelmed by the undead.

Now, in a marvel of modern technology, it has become possible to return to those golden times via your web browser, and it could serve as a very nostalgic way to spend an afternoon.

The start of the Shangri-La Zombies map in Call of Duty: Black Ops 1.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post confirming that Call of Duty: Black Ops' Zombies mode is available to play on most functioning web browsers, entirely for free. It features all of the maps from the original game to play on, and you can even host your own lobby and invite friends to enjoy it in multiplayer mode, just as you used to all the way back in the day.

There are some performance issues, but it is playable by all accounts and fans have been delighted to see it return. "Working on Chrome at work for me right now. On Round 12 on Kino. Never thought I'd have so much fun playing zombies at 1 frame per sometimes. 10/10," one said.

While another added, "It works flawlessly on my MacBook Pro M4, on Chrome with like 12 tabs open and 2 LLM'S running in the background at the same time LOL... Hope I don't get my s**t hacked! Thanks for sharing."

This all comes about thanks to the ability of the general population to access AI tools that make work like this considerably easier to complete. Though AI in gaming has overall been a force of terrible uncertainty (and pain, in many cases), this is a decent use case for it, particularly if it's used similarly on less popular games, to keep them alive from a preservation perspective.

If you do decide to play it at work or at school, just be sure not to tell anyone you heard about it from us yeah? Aside from that, go nuts and blast zombies away while your boss thinks you're working on that spreadsheet for them.

On the Call of Duty front more generally, there's obviously plenty on the way in the near-future for fans to be excited about. The big arrival is obviously Modern Warfare 4, with campaign early access for that set to launch tomorrow, on Friday October 16. That's all before a general release date of October 23, when the masses will arrive and start shooting each other once again.
