Team Uruguay arrives in India before international friendly in Kolkata

The Uruguayan men’s national team reached Kolkata on Wednesday ahead of its international friendly against India on October 6.

Uruguay, which has been on an Asia tour in this international window, has played matches against Japan and South Korea, losing 1-3 to the Samurai Blue and then thrashing the Koreans 4-1.

On Wednesday evening, La Celeste arrived at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport from Seoul to a warm welcome. The squad, however, will miss midfielder Federico Valverde, who picked up an injury before the window and has stayed back in Madrid for recovery.

This tour is also the first set of international matches under head coach Diego Forlan, who took over the side after the FIFA World Cup 2026. Forlan, a former Uruguay forward who won the World Cup Golden Ball in 2010, returns to India after nearly a decade.

The former Atletico Madrid and Manchester United forward had played as a marquee player for Mumbai City in the Indian Super League in 2016.

Uruguay’s match on October 6 will be played at the Salt Lake Stadium and will be its last match in this window. So will it be for India, which will lock horns with Brazil at the same venue three days earlier.
